How to prevent split ends and hair breakage
Split ends are a common hair problem, but it doesn’t mean that you should ignore them if you start noticing some at the end of your hair. They are your hair’s way of telling you that it needs a little nudge to get back into shape. But the most important question arises here.
Can split ends be repaired?
The brief answer? No, they can’t. Once you have split ends, there’s no actual way to get rid of them, no matter how much a haircare product promises to. The only way to get rid of this is to trim the ends or those hair strands will stop growing.
While there are some methods to conceal split hair, the best thing you can do is focus on prevention. A correct hair treatment for split ends focuses on hydrating and nourishing the hair before it turns frayed.
A few tips for preventing split ends:
- Be gentle with wet hair
Wet hair is prone to damage, so it’s necessary to care for your tresses gently after shampooing and conditioning. Never rub wet hair with a towel because frequent rubbing can cause hair breakage. It can also harm your hair cuticles, resulting in split ends or frizz.
What to do instead? Blot it dry with a towel to keep it away from breakage and damage.
- Hydrate your hair
Keeping your locks moisturized will prevent split ends. Dryness can weaken hair, especially at the ends, and this can cause hair to damage and split ends.
To add moisture to your hair, try oiling your hair or make an egg hair mask. A hair mask is a deep conditioning remedy that can infuse your hair with moisture and minimize frizz and dryness.
- Get your hair trimmed regularly
Get your hair trimmed every 6-12 weeks (about 3 months). If you’re concerned about maintaining your length, don’t be! Ask your hair stylist to use a method called “dusting” to get rid of pesky frayed ends without sacrificing any length.
- Dial down the heat
Using heat frequently can dry your hair out and change the shape of your hair proteins. Let your hair air dry after washing, and then style it without using a heating iron. Always use heat protection spray if you use a curling or straightening iron. Remember to turn down the heat setting.
