Top 10 ways to keep hair hydrated in summer

Your hair can feel a little dry and less hydrated mostly in summer because of the heat sucking out all the moisture it, but it is also quite common in winter for some of us with dry and flaky scalp. Keeping your hair and scalp hydrated is just as important as water is to your kidneys.

How does hair hydrate itself?

Hair strands are surrounded by glands that produce natural oil called sebum. Sebum keeps the hair strands lubricate and waterproofing the hair and skin and protects it from bacteria and fungi. For some reason when sebum fails to travel and coat the whole hair strand, dryness and dehydration takes place as moisture is able to leave freely.

Drinking water is one but not the only way to have naturally soft and hydrated hair because your hair roots need so much more than that to stay hydrated. If you are suffering from dry, frizzy, and dehydrated hair, keep reading these top 10 ways to hydrate your hair!

1. Oil your scalp

If you have an oily scalp, you can either skip oils or use a milder one that's less greasy and more hydrating. Oil massages at least once a week, especially if you produce a very little quantity of sebum, is the easiest, most effective, and a natural way to hydrate hair and promote hair growth.

2. Use Satin Pillowcases

Cotton pillowcases cause friction that damages your hair, cause split ends, and strip it of the much-needed moisture. Satin pillowcases will not tug at your hair follicles and help reduce split ends as these are soft, hypoallergenic, and less absorbent.

3. Moisturizing with oil and water

A mix of water and oil keeps hair super hydrated as water absorbs moisture into your hair and oil locks in the moisture.

4. Condition Right

A cream-based one with deep conditioning ingredients works great in winter, whereas a mild one is good for the summer. You can even apply a hydrating conditioner without shampooing it on the days you don’t wash your hair and it works wonders!

5. Nutrition

Mostly, dry hair needs good nutrition to be hydrated. You can either provide this nutrition to your hair by choosing healthier foods with vitamins and minerals, or by applying hair masks that provide direct nutrition to your scalp and hair.

6. Avoid heat styling

If you already have dry hair, avoid heat-styling your hair as it strips moisture out of your hair. If it is a must, use heat styling tool on the coolest setting your tool can provide and use a heat-resistant or heat-care product to save your hair.

7. Trim Those Split Ends Off

Natural hair is more prone to frequent breakage, split ends, brittle ends, and becomes unmanageable. Trim your hair regularly to get rid of these very common issues.

8. Don't Wash Your Hair Everyday

You don't have to wash your hair every day when you shower because the more you wash your hair, the drier it will become.

9. Use A Spritzer

Mix aloe vera and rose water in a spray bottle and spray on clean hair every day for regular hydration. This promotes healthy hair growth and also protects your hair from the sun.

10. Use Sun Protection

Use a leave-in hair spray or serum, Vitamin E oil (a natural sun protectant), or wear a hat, a cap, or a scarf or a bandana when you are going in the sun to create a barrier against sun damage.
